Creativity with Numbers
Draw your own mystery tree. Write questions for people to search for things in your tree. Share your work with @ArtofMathEd & @BriscoeBooks
Try the Connect the Dots with King Penguin.
Try Subtraction with Buzz the Bee.
Try Decomposing Numbers for King Penguin. (Kindergarten, Grade 1)
Symmetrical Characters
Use the colouring sheets provided for the characters Hop Hop and Painter Paul. There is part of the image missing! Laura (author and illustrator of the book), used a vertical line to cut part of the image in half. Fill in what’s missing and add colour to your picture.
Create a new character for the book! Draw, paint or use LEGO!
Road Trip
Plan a day to go on a road trip (drive or walk)! Use the sheet provided to record the information from your trip and keep a tally of the items you find. When you return, describe your results to a family member.
Grade 1: with help from an adult, create a bar graph to share your information visually!
Draw the outline of something you saw on your road trip (for example a leaf or a bird) onto cardboard. Cut this out as a stencil. Use the stencil to create a unique design using translations (movements), rotations (turns) and reflections (flips) of your image. Show your design to an adult and describe your steps. Add colour or pattern to your image.
Cereal Design & Estimation
Create your own brand of cereal starring the character you made for the book. Design the package by placing paper over a box from your own pantry! Or use this template.
How many cereal boxes tall are you? Can you find something in your house that is one box tall? Two boxes?
(See full activity list for more ideas)
Estimation: How Many Mini Wheats? Use the photo in the video to make your guess. (Estimation Activity)
*Note: some clues will be difficult for this grade level, but they can still guess from the image and skip to the "reveal".
Choose an object in your house to estimate how many will fit in your cereal box (e.g. marshmallows, dried beans, candies... anything the same size.)
Playful Organization
No road trip is possible without some form of transportation!
If you have a set of toy vehicles, sort them into groups using different features (type, colour, number of wheels). Order them from smallest to largest.
Set up a ramp (use books, cardboard… be creative). How far does the car travel when it leaves the ramp? Measure the distance using your feet!
Use the number line and create a roadside scene. Use a car and your number line to help you answer the math questions on this worksheet.
Observations
What Do You See Passing By?
Set a timer for 5 - 15 minutes (depending on age). Find a spot to sit outside or look out a window.
Create a list of what you THINK might pass by. (Dogs? Birds? People walking? Buses? Cars?). Keep a record by drawing a small picture of each one you see. This method of tracking data is called a pictograph.
Using the results, how likely is it that you will see each of your items if you come back again tomorrow. (Impossible, unlikely, less likely, more likely, certain).
